LOCATION AND POPULATION

Situated in the heart of Brazos County, Bryan serves as the county seat and forms a metropolitan area with its neighbor, College Station. At 54.8 square miles, the city is slightly larger than its neighbor College Station, which lies southeast. The serene Lake Bryan lies northwest. Houston is roughly 97 miles southeast, while Austin lies 102 miles west. Both destinations can be reached in less than two hours by car.

As of 2020, more than 84,000 individuals live in Bryan. The city enjoys a steady population growth, marking a 9.7% increase since 2010. It also has a median age of 31 years old, below the state average of 35.

CLIMATE

Bryan has a humid subtropical climate, which characterizes much of the southeastern U.S. This type of climate is marked by long, hot summers and mild, rarely snowing winters, making it a favorable environment for enjoying the area’s natural beauty year-round.

HISTORY

Bryan’s roots trace back to the 1820s and 1830s when settlers from Stephen F. Austin’s colony began establishing communities in the area.

It was officially established in 1859 on land donated by William Joel Bryan, Austin’s nephew. Despite major setbacks caused by the Civil War, Bryan grew steadily and was formally incorporated as a city in 1871.

By the early 20th century, Bryan had more than 3,000 residents, a flourishing cotton and poultry industry, its own school district, and various community institutions. The city’s growth accelerated in the 1960s due to the rapid expansion of nearby Texas A&M University in College Station, which significantly impacted the city’s development and regional importance.
